Melanated History Month(Mama C)
Shalom Y'all,
Today's Melanated Hero is Charlotte Hill O'Neal a.k.a Mama C. Mama C as she is affectionately called by all that know her,she is a poet, activist, musician, and visual artist and a former Black Panther of the KC Chapter. Mama C was born in Kansas City Kansas in 1951. However because of some trumped up charges her and her husband Mr.Pete O'Neal left the United States.
She now with her loving husbands calls Tanzanian home! However with all these odds stacked against her she was determined to still bring Melanated Power to all she came in contact with. As a result Mama C and Baba Pete founded the United African Alliance Community Center, and the Tomorrow Children's Home in 1972.
Mama C was the first African woman to be selected for a two month Writers Residency in the Shanghai(China)Writing Program. In 2015 Mama C was the featured poet at the Hangzhou (China)Poetry Festival.

Melanated History Month(Mr.Charlie Wiggins,)
Shalom Y'all,
Today's Melanated Hero is Mr.Charlie Wiggins a.k.a "The Negro Speed King". Mr. Wiggins was born in 1897 in Evansville Indiana and was the oldest of his parents three sons. Mr. Wiggins was an entrepreneur,at the age of 9yrs old he had a shoe shine business. He made almost a dollar a day,a lot of money at the time.
However Mr.Wiggins real passion was cars. He would go around to different garages watching the mechanics work. He was a quick learner so by 17yrs old he was working on cars as a mechanic as well. It is said that Mr. Wiggins could listen to a car and know exactly what was wrong with it.
As he got older his desire was to race cars. His dream would've been the Indy 500,however because of racial prejudice that would never become a reality. Mr. Wiggins was not the only Melanated race car driver that had a desire to race on a higher scale. With their desire came action and with the help of Mr. William Rucker the(CSA) Colored Speedway Association was born.
Mr. Wiggins went on to win many races, unfortunately a racing accident claimed his right leg. After he recuperated he decided to train and coach other young men who had a need for speed.

His mother was devastated his father had just died, and her other children had been sold. Before he was shipped off he was allowed to see his mother. She gave him a silver half dollar and told him to buy himself a book and a comb. Melanated History Month(Maggie Lena Walker)
Shalom Y'all,
Mrs. Maggie Lena Walker is the Melanated Hero we are celebrating today. Mrs. Maggie Lena Walker was the first Melanated woman to ran a bank! On November 2,1903 Saint Luke Penny Savings Bank was open in Richmond Virginia. On the grand opening there were almost 300 customer. That day some people open accounts with as little as $0.31,and other with $100.00.
Masai and I had a blast learning about the first Melanated woman to own a bank. We may not own our own bank, however I do believe in saving and teaching our children to do the same. I have the say account that I opened at age 14. I've encouraged my Sun's to save there money. So for birthdays the money they receive goes in to their accounts they opened up at the ages of 3,4,and 6 years old. I believe wholeheartedly that this is something that we should install in our children, and more importantly is to help them invest their money in a Melanated Owned Bank if possible. http://www.blackpast.org/aah/walker-maggie-lena-1867-1934

Melanated History Month(DJ Kool Herc)
Shalom Y'all,
One thing that the Long household is full of is Books and Music! The hubby and I play music all the time. From Jazz,Gospel, and Reggae, your bound to hear music of some kind. So there's no surprise that Masai loves all types of music, and dancing. However Break Dancing(as he calls it Dance Break),is his all time favorite. So last year we decided to go to the library and check out some books about this amazing dance, and the beautiful era it came from.
So for Melanated History Month we decided to study DJ Kool Herc! Was from the Bronx, and to stay out of trouble he turned to music. One of his favorite things to do was spin records. He would play breaks back to back so the music would go on and on! He would shout out his friends names, and make little rhymes to go along with it. He is just one of many Melanated people who came up with this style of Music and Dance in the late 60's and 70's that is still very much alive and still popular today.
