Jack L. Cooper was the First African-American Radio Announcer in 1920s, he broke barriers in America radio.
A veteran stage performer and columnist for the Chicago Defender, Cooper recognized that African-American audiences were largely ignored by radio. In 1929, he launched The All-Negro Hour on WSBC in Chicago, a groundbreaking variety show showcasing Black performers and avoiding harmful racial stereotypes.
The show later included news relevant to the African-American community, setting a standard for inclusive programming. By 1937, Cooper was hosting multiple programs five days a week, blending genres like blues, jazz, and gospel to celebrate Black culture. Jack L. Cooper passed away on January 12, 1970, in Chicago, but his legacy endures. In 2012, he was posthumously inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame, a testament to his pioneering contributions to broadcasting.
