Let the “Beet”Drop

Yoooooo let the “Beet” drop!!! For the last few years we’ve been growing beets. Beets are now as an adult one of my favorite veggies(can’t say that when I was a kid lol). However after using a old skool recipe for canning them it became real real for me. Getting down to the rich benefits and eating these little tart red balls have been fun and delicious!

Beetroot contains vitamins A,C,and B group. They are a good source of calcium, iron magnesium, potassium, manganese and fibre.

2. Beet greens are edible

Beet greens, the leafy part of the vegetable are the healthiest part of the plant. They contain the vitamins and minerals found in the root as well as, fibre, vitamin B6, and have significant amounts of vitamin A and C, calcium and iron.

3. Beets can lower blood pressure

The inorganic nitrate content of beets is converted to nitric oxide which helps improve blood flow. This is beneficial on the cardiovascular system and helps reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow.

4. Beets fight inflammation

Beets can help fight inflammation. They are a source of betaine which protects cells from environmental stress. Eating beets regularly has a powerful effect due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

5. Beets boost stamina and energy levels

Beets have significant amounts of carbohydrates to provide fuel for energy and sports activities. Researchers have noticed that oxygen intake increases by up to 16% in stamina for exercise.

6. Beets are good for heart health

The nutrient betaine found in beets lowers levels of homocysteine which can be harmful to blood vessels. Eating beetroot helps prevent cardiovascular diseases as the fibre in beets strip excess LDL cholesterol from the walls of the blood vessels and eliminates it from the body quickly.

7. Beets have anti cancer properties

The cancerous cell growth in lung, skin and colon cancer can be counteracted by the pigment betacyanin is obtained from drinking beet juice. Beetroot extract is being studied for use in treating pancreatic cancer, breast and prostate cancer. Studies show that betalains are good at protecting the body against developing some cancers like lung, stomach, colon and breast cancer.

8. Beets help your body detox

Beets support detoxification of the whole body and strengthen the immune system. Beetroot extract helps to get rid of free radicals from your body’s cells.

10. Beets can reduce the risks of birth defects

Beets are very good for pregnant women as they are a rich source of vitamin B folate. This vitamin helps in the development of the infant’s spinal column. A deficiency of folate could lead to a variety of conditions called neural tube defects. The vitamin B folate lowers the dangers of birth defects in babies. The vitamin B folate in beets is very good for pregnant women as the vitamin B helps in the development of the infant’s spinal column.

11. Beets reduce the risk of strokes

A deficiency of potassium in the body increases the risk of strokes and so the beetroot that is rich in potassium is recommended to improve heart health. Potassium relaxes the blood vessels and reduces blood pressure throughout the body. Blood clots are less likely to form when blood pressure is reduced and vessels and arteries are no longer contracted.

12. Beets supports mental health

Beets are a good source of folate, also known as B-9 it is important for good brain health. Folate works with B12 to help iron function in your body and produce red blood cells. The nitric oxide produced from beets helps increase blood flow throughout your body. This improves blood flow to the frontal lobes of the brain.Blood flow to the brain decreases with age and this can lead to a decline in cognition. Drinking beet juice can improve oxygenation to the brain slowing down the process of dementia. Beets have high levels of tryptophan that keeps you relaxed and calm. They also contain betalain used in anti-depressants.

13. Beets will strengthen the immune system

Moving Forward

Trauma is blinding and can make it to where you can’t see anything pass your traumatic experience. Guess what that’s ok.. I’m personally not a firm believer in the form of forgiveness we’ve been taught, nor in the delusion of closure(I’m a REAL different kind lol),but I do believe in healing!

No you may never get the closure you feel you deserve, hell most of these mutherfucka’s don’t believe they’re done wrong..so there’s that heartfelt forgiveness you were banking on. However all definitely ain’t lost, that healing is up to you!

Yeah it’ll be nice to get all the feels you think you deserve from those that have done ya wrong…but realistically probably won’t happen. But please don’t let their fuckery stop you from being your best you…you are a victory not a victim(lol and I ain’t opposed to jarring they asses and packing them deep into the ground under graveyard dirt😅)! Lol nah keep rising and striving, you got this.

Black Seeds

Have you heard of black seed oil? I'm pretty sure by now there's not many that haven't. I've heard it's been used for hair growth to upset stomach's and eeverything in between. Growing up my Mom use to put it on all her baked goods. My sister and I hated it. All this little black seeds all over the place, and in every single bite of food...yuuck. However as the years have passed, and I be taken the time to go through many of my Mom's old recipes and Cookbooks I'm truly amazing at how ahead of her time she was in the 70',80's and 90's. What we as children deemed as abuse and trying to ruin our lives I now am thankful, blessed and honored to have lived through.

About 2 yrs ago I was diagnosed with http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/guide/hives-urticaria-angioedema. I was totally in shock I've lived a holistic lifestyle all my life so what the heck. I was told to stop breastfeeding, and to pretty much stop eating all the things that consist of a holistic diet. Grapes, nuts, oranges, keylimes, plums, cherries and all berries. I'm like yeah ok. So the doctor prescribed me I kind you not 6 different medications 4 of which he said I'd need for life(one of the many reasons I don't fool with'em). So for 1 1/2 years I used all natural holistic remedies.

I was blessed to have a huge old school resources book of my mother's and found a great all natural way of controlling my hives. So I started using Quercetin and Bromelin http://quercetinbromelain.org/ . Unfortunately I had to use it 5-6 times a day. I don't like being depended on anything. So if I left it our forget to take it  I'd brake out...so not cool. So a few months ago I decided to revisit the benefits of Black Seed Oil. I made a call to my moma and asked her why she felt it necessary to sprinkle all our food with these little black seeds  at the time. So it got dem wheels a turning in this head of mines. https://draxe.com/black-seed-oil-benefits/

1. Relief of allergies and asthma: Many studies have shown how black cumin seed oil alleviates asthma, allergies, and other respiratory issues. The seed’s thymoquinone is shown in one study to be superior to the drug fluticasone in an animal model of asthma. In a study tested on human subjects, boiled water extracts of black seed showed a potent anti-asthmatic effect on asthmatic airways. Another randomized, placebo-controlled human study of chemical weapons injured patients found that boiled water extracts of black seed reduced respiratory symptoms, chest wheezing, and pulmonary function test values, as well as reduced the need for drug treatment.
According to Mkrtumyan, “Research’s strongest claim with the black cumin seed oil has to do with its healing benefits to the respiratory system. My son suffers from allergies and I have asthma and we see a direct benefit from continued use of the oil. The recommended dosage is 2 0r 3 teaspoons taken twice a day – but this amount can vary based on the season and the needs of the individual.”
2. Immune System Boost: Black cumin seeds contains antioxidants, beneficial acids and b-vitamins that balance the immune system. They have been found superior to almost every other natural remedy when used for autoimmune disorders. One study on ratsfound that black cumin seeds increased the immune response. Also, while herbs such as echenesia and elderberry can be dangerous for those with autoimmune disease. But according to studies and personal testimonies, black cumin seeds seem to balance the immune system increasing immune function but not encouraging immune reactions against the body’s healthy tissue. Another case presentation study highlights the complete recovery and sero-reversion of adult HIV patient after treatment with Nigella sativa concoction for the period of six months.
3. Anti-cancerous: Many studies show the reduction of cancer tumor linked to black cumin seed oil. In one study, the anticancer properties of black cumin seed were shown to cause a direct reduction of breast cancer cells. The thymoquinone in black seed has been shown to help induce apoptosis (cell death) in leukemia cells. Other studies have shown this same effect in brain tumor cells, cervical and pancreatic cancer, and oral cancer cells and cavity-forming bacteria (7). Black seed oil is also sometimes recommended as a natural protection against some of the danger from radiation and used in conjunction with conventional treatments.
In cases of colon caner, cell studies have found that black seed extract compares favorably to the chemoagent 5-fluoruracil in the suppression of the cancer’s growth, but with a far higher safety profile. Further research on rats also showed how black seed’s significant inhibitory effects, without observable side effects.
4. Anti-Inflammatory: According to Mkrtumyan, the oil of the black seed has shown anti-inflammatory properties “on several inflammation-based models including experimental encephalomyelitis, colitis, peritonitis, oedama, and arthritis through suppression of the inflammatory mediators prostaglandins and leukotriens.” One French study as well as another study in Iran showed how black cumin seeds’s thymoquinone strongly inhibits fMLF-induced neutrophil functions and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties in vivo. Another study demonstrated that thymoquinone inhibits inflammation induced activation of MAPKs, NF-KB and ROS generation followed by suppressing the gene expression of c-Fos and NFATc1 in osteoclast precursors.
5. Anti-microbial: Mkrtumyan attests that “black seed may also have benefits in fighting unwanted microbes including “bacteria, viruses, helminths, and fungus.” Once again, thymoquinone has shown to be the active ingredient that goes to war against harmful microbes in our body.
MRSA has even been wiped out by black cumin oil. Here’s one study that links this to the thymoquionone in black cumin seeds. Another study conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College researchers set out to determine just how potent black seed oil is against some of these superbugs and pared it against several antibiotics such as Amoxicillin, Gatifloxacin, and Tetracycline. According to the study, “Out of 144 strains tested, most of which were resistant to a number of antibiotics, 97 were inhibited by the oil of black cumin.”
6. Digestive Aid: These powerful little seeds are carminative, meaning they aid in digestion and may decrease gas, bloating and stomach pain. Intestinal parasites have been successful fought off with this oil. One study traced the gastroprotective properties of black seed to thymoquoinone. One study showed how black seed inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells with no negative side effects.
7. Improves the Quality of Hair, Skin, and Nails: For centuries, black cumin seed oil was used topically to soften, strengthen and firm skin and help increase hair growth. It minimizes dark spots on the face and discoloration. It can encourage better moisture-retention, giving hair more luster and body. However, Mkrtumyan’s findings show that “some of the essential components of the oil can cause irritation when used topically. The same benefits can be derived from the oil when taken internally, without any irritation or side-effects.” There have en been studies on the seed as a useful remedy against scars and to prevent scar formation on wounds.
8. Heals skin problems like eczema and psoriasis: Black seed oil has also proved to be very beneficial for those who suffer from skin problems like eczema and psoriasis. According to a recent study, it helps sooth inflammation and improve the speed and which skin heals.
9. Cardiovascular Benefits: Studies

KC Kid of the Week: This is our very first feature and it is of 5yr old Masai Hoshea Long. At a very young age his parents saw the potential he had to be great, so through encouragement and support Masai was able to start his own business, Masai's Fresh Garden Eats.

Masai's Fresh Garden Eats was designed to encourage children and to teach them that they can still enjoy all their favorite foods just with a healthier twist. Masai believes it's easier to encourage your friends to eat lettuce, tomatoes spinach, and yellow squash, if you can show them that it was grown in love by someone that looks just like them.

That's where the inspiration for his first book came from "Masai the Warrior and His Garden Adventures". While at the library looking for books on gardening, there were few book with people that look like him, so with the help of his parents Masai set out to change that. Not only is Masai an entrepreneur and author but he is also an avid reader who already has read thousands of books. We are excited to see what Masai’s next adventure will be!
