Black History Month”W.B.Purvis”

Have you heard of Mr. W..B. Purvis???! Well each time you use a fountain pen,bag your groceries,or ride a train think on him! This was really fascinating to learn about. We have always been history 365❤️🖤💚!!!

William was born the son of Joseph Purvis and Sarah Louisa Forten... He pass away in 1914. However William Purvis of Philadelphia invented and patented improvements to the fountain pen in 1890. His goal was to make a "more durable, inexpensive and better pen to carry in the pocket." Purvis inserted an elastic tube between the pen nib and the ink reservoir that used a suction action to return any excess ink to the ink reservoir, reducing ink spills and increasing the longevity of the ink.

Purvis also invented two machines for making paper bags which he sold to the Union Paper Bag Company of New York, as well as a bag fastener, a self-inking hand stamp and several devices for electric railroads. His first paper bag machine, for which he received a patent, created satchel bottom-type bags in an improved volume and with greater automation than previous machines. Here’s Mr. Purvis patents

1. Purvis's first patent, in February 27, 1883, was an improvement of the hand stamp that enabled it to replenish its own ink.

2. Fountain Pen patented 419,065 on January 7, 1890.

3. Paper Bags from 1884 to 1897, he was granted at least six different patents for paper bag technology. In August 1890 Purvis was issued a patent for an improved paper bag machine manufactured satchel bottom shopping bags at an improved volume with greater automation than any previous machinery.

4. First installed in New Jersey, Purvis's close-conduit electric railway system set an electromagnet under the center of the railcar. The closed conduit construction was made by insulating material, and installing many soft iron cables on its surface. The cable was attracted upwardly against the top of the space in which it lay, making contact with a brass strip.
