Did You Say Latkes!?!

Shalom Y'all,
I pray all is well with you and yours. Here at the Long Household we are preparing for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, both fell on the same week this years!!! How exciting is that..Masai thinks it's the best thing ever lol. For both of these beautiful celebrations family and food are definitely at the center of them. Since we loove to cook this will be a piece of cake for us. However being that we try to live a complete holistic lifestyle I've decided to take some of our traditional family recipe and throw a healthier spin on it. So the Star for our Hanukkah Feast will be Latkes and Chucky Apple Sauce,so let's get started!

Latkes(4-6 servings)
4 medium russet potatoes
1 sm yellow onion
1/4 oat flour
1t baking powder
1T fresh basil
1T apple cider vinegar
1/2t himalayan salt
1/2t cracked black pepper
1/2cup distilled water
4T chia seeds
5T olive oil

Chunky Apple Sauce(3-4 servings)
3 medium gala apples
1t organic sugar
1t cinnamon
1t ground ginger
1/4 ground clove

Use a shredder to shredd potatoes(like you would for hash browns). Wash several times until water is clear. Set aside. Get a jar with a lid,add your 1/2 cup of water. Slowly add the 4T chia seeds. Secure with lid and give it a few shakes set aside. Chop up your onion and basil add to well drained potatoes. Add the flour, baking powder  and all seasoning. Take about 3T of your chia seed gel and add into the mixture. Carefully sprinkle the apple cider vinegar on top. Combine well, form in to 4-6 potato cakes. Place in inbox for 10-15 minutes.

Meanwhile wash and cut the skin off your gala apples. Place in a pot of boiling water. Cook until tender. Strain water off. Smash with a potatoe smasher. Add the sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and clove. Mix well. Place in icebox to chill.

Remove your Latkes from the icebox add your olive oil to a cast iron skillet. Allow to get hot(not boiling). Gently add 3 latkes at a time. Cook 3-4 minutes until nice and brown on either side. Once all latkes have been fried(or baked at 350 for 15 minutes per side). Remove chunky apple serve and enjoy!
                                                                                                                   Light,Love,and Shalom

Kwanzaa and Hanukkah

Shalom Y'all,
I pray all is well with you and yours!!! There's so much happening this month both my nephews birthdays, and of course Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. Although my family doesn't celebrate holiday's we do enjoy family and friends on this Holy day and day of Unity!!!

So this week during our Learning Time my Sun and I have been talking and reading about these special day's. So it got me to thinking of ways to incorporate the history, reason for the celebration of these day's to life for him. For the past two years after Kwanzaa my Sun would pretend he was lighting the candles of a Kinara weeks after...lol.

So I'm like here's the perfect thing to do make our very own Kinara and Unity Cup. When we set down to discuss today's activities,he was so excited to hear of our plans. We had so much fun,and with the leftover clay he made a place to put his Chakra Stones. If your interested in making you very own Kinara check out my homemade clay recipe http://sunnidelights.blogspot.com/2016/09/literacy-month.html?m=1                                                                                                               Light,Love, and Shalom

Monday Morning Blues Fun Learning Activities

Shalom Y'all
Hope everyone had a great safe weekend. Like most Monday's for us can really be uggghhh...lol. It's always pretty emotional for #3 after being with Abba all weekend,he still doesn't understand the whole going back to work on Monday. So oftentimes then not Monday for us are extremely chill.

However I still don't want to not sneak in some form of learning. So here at Melanated History and Torah Based Academy we came up with these fun Monday Morning Blues Fun Learning Activities. I take all the Torah Verses, and Sight Words we learned in the last month or so,and make these little mini learning stations.

Most of us have key chains hanging around that we don't use. We absolutely love the Dollar Store for inexpensive school supplies, and stores like Dollar Tree have these cool Winnie The Pooh sight word flash cards(now mind you I got these 2 years ago, never hurts to check it out though). So let's get started...

(Items You'll Need)
8-10 permanent markers
3-4 old key rings
10-12 blank colored index cards or store brought flash cards
Hole bunch
Torah(Bible) if your doing Torah verses

Gather all your supplies. Remove keys from the key rings you plan to use. Write Torah Verses,or your own Sight Words on your index cards. Punch a hole in the corner of each index or flash card, and attach them to the key rings. Sooo freaking simple right???  There ya have it..Monday Morning Blues Fun Learning Activities!!! Until next time...

                                                                                                                   Light,Love,and Shalom

Herbs and Cold Blend

Shalom Y'all,
Just finished drying out my herbs from my garden. My family and I are set for winter, with enough goodies to make teas, homemade remedies, and tinctures. I put in work in Spring and Summer for this very purpose. Also check my store for an AMAZING cold remedie tea blend next month Sunni's Winter Blend will be available for purchase.... https://squareup.com/store/sunnis-holistic-delights

                                                                                                                                 SunniDelight💙

Pumpkin Delight Breakfast/Meal Replacement Smoothie

Shalom Y'all,
I pray this finds all is well with you and yours. I've had an extremely busy coupe months trying to get my business Sunni's Holistic Delights off the ground. Everything is coming along slow but sure,I know it will all fall into place just how Abba Yah sees fit so I wait patiently. Anywho lets jump right into the reason for this post..lol.

FALL is here!!! Fall is one of my favorite seasons(Spring is the other one).Boots light jackets and sweaters my kind of weather. So not only is the cooler weather enjoyable, but the easy access to pumpkins is what REALLY gets me going...lol. I absolutely LOVE pumpkins. Pumpkin pies, burgers, smoothies, and pumpkin cheese fries are just a few things that set the Fall apart from all the other season.

So as promise here is my yummy, creamy, rich, tasty, and healthy meal replacement pumpkin smoothie.

Makes 2-3 Servings

1 1/2 cups fresh or can(I use fresh)
2 cups dairy free milk(I use vanilla almond)
1 ripe banana
1t cinnamon
1t pumpkin spice
1t nutmeg
Dash clove
2-3 8oz mason jars with lids

Cut pumpkin scrap out meat(save seeds to eat later delicious). I like to cook the pumpkin meat for 20 minutes on low heat until it turns a deep orange. Take off eye and let sit covered for 2-3 hours to cool(or place in icebox over night). However if your using canned pumpkin omit the above..lol. Place pumpkin in blender along with dairy free milk, add all the spices as well. Blend on medium speed, until well combined(I like mines think so if you like a thinner smoothie add more milk). Pour into your mason jars with the lids or enjoy right away. We like ours with a little whipped cream and clove sprinkled on top!!!
                                                                                                                   Light,Love,and Shalom
                                                                                                                                 SunniDelight💙

Literacy Month

Shalom Y'all
Masai and I have had a blast learning about all the different Melanated people that have done so many AMAZING things this year for Literacy Month!!! Unfortunately some of these Heroes are not well known,so we made it our mission to find a few and learn as much as we could about them. We enjoyed reading about the first Melanated samurai Mr. Yasuke and how he was a great warrior. We tried our hand at making some Chinese letters....lol. https://youtu.be/HAp0d97UcfQ

This week we learned about Ms.Mary Seacole. She was a nurse, who learn herbal medicine from her mother. Armed with these skill she sit out to help the wounded service men,but instead was shown discrimination because of the color of her skin. However Ms.Seacole didn't let that stop her she went on to do great things and help many people. https://youtu.be/RIrim4r-LbY

Our history is so RICH and full of some of the most amazing people!!! Some famous and some not so famous. However each and everyone of them made many sacrifices, some even with their lives. So that we could have the freedoms we have today(although we are still far from FREE). So please do yourself and your children a favor and research our history, because it didn't start on slaveships with bullwhips....

Healthy Pink Lemonade

Shalom Y'all,
My heart is truly heavy,as I write this with tears in my eye's holding my Melanated Sun!!! My prayers are with all of the beautiful Melanated suns, brothers, dads, husbands, friends, lovers, sisters, mothers who have been assassinated in the last few days. Sending light, love, healing, and shalom your way. This water fast has been not only beneficial to my health, but a great way for me to stay centered. There is some much going in our world today, that it's easy to because unbalanced mentally. Pushing away from the table along with daily meditation, fasting, and prayer has been a huge help for me. However the pain, and hurt for my Melanated family still remains.....

Today water is a recipe my mom used often with my sister and I to remove toxins and free radicals from our bodies. Bentonite Clay is kinda like a Jack of all traids,it does a lil bit of everything,to ensure your body is in tip top shape inside and out.
https://draxe.com/10-bentonite-clay-benefits-uses/

(Makes 4 Servings)

2 cups strawberries
2 lemons
1/2 t bentonite clay
1 q distilled water
1 q pitcher
Knife
Blender
Glass containers with lids(do not usemetal)

Wash your strawberries. Cut lemons in halves peel them, and add all fruit to blender. Add half of your w
ater, blend to combine. Add the rest of your water. Slowly sprinkle bentonite clay on top of water/fruit mixture. Working quickly(bentonite clay can absorbs free radicals)blend well. Pour into your jars(do not use metal libs). Again make sure you keep your drink covered,in order to keep it from absorbing unwanted free radicals. However it'll do wonders for the yuckies that the Activated Charcoal didn't get yesterday.

Literacy Month

Shalom Y'all
This month is special to me for two reasons, the first being the world was graced with my presence on September 13th 1975,and it's Literacy Month!!! When I tell you I absolutely LOVE to read it's the TRUTH.

Growing up reading always felt like a punishment. My mom's ways of disciplining us was to make us read, write, and learn full chapters of Torah(the Bible). At the time I thought it was the worst. Lol however I now truly appreciate it,it help me develope my strong relationship with the Most High. Nonetheless I still hated making sense of some of the words didn't come easy for me,that's when years later I was diagnosed with Dyslexia.

Armed with this new information and learning tools my life was changed forever!!! Books became my greatest joy. So much so that I still read about a book a week give or take. I ran an successful Summer Reading and Public Speaking Program for 13yrs for low income families. I also instilled a love for reading in my three Sun's. My older two Sun's ages 21 and 19 won awards for their Public Speaking skills, and have been asked to read for church, school, and even a few radio spots!!! My youngest Sun(3 yrs old)just completed a 1,000 book challenge in 3 months.

Just a little history on why I have such a fondness of reading. So for this years Literacy Month #3 and I are finding articles on-line about unknown African Americans who have contributed to building us up as a people, but their stories haven't really been told. So this weeks African American  is Mr. Dave(Drake) Potter. Mr.Potter was a slave, and learned pottery for one of his slave owner brother in-laws. Mr.Potter went on to make many BEAUTIFUL works of art that are now worth thousands of dollars.

So not only did we read Mr.Potter's story(google his AMAZING story)

we decided to try our hand a pottery..lol. So here's a fun easy and edible clay recipe I've used with my Sun's over the years.

1 cup water
1/2 cup corn starch
1 cup flour
1T olive oil
2T cinnamon
1T clove
1 non-stick pot
1 long handle wooden spoon

In your non-stick pan add corn starch and flour in pan mix well. Slowly add water stirring continually. Continue to mix mixture until it resembles mashed potatoes. Add in cinnamon and clove to give it the brown coloring. Scrape dough out of pot, transfer to bowl with lid and let rest for an hour or so. Once rested take out and make hand prints, animals, numbers, letters etc. Let dry for two to three days,or cook in a oven for two hour. I hope this fun family activity brings as much joy as it has my family over the years...until next time.

                                                                                                                   Light,Love,and Shalom

Our Breastfeeding Journey

Shalom Y'all
This week is National Black Breastfeeding Week. It's a week for those of us who breastfeed. It is a time when we as mom's can come together and talk about the joys, perks, pains, and encourage other's on their breastfeeding journey. I'm blessed to have fed three Sun's at my breast with #3 and I still currently going strong!!!

I didn't have a lot of the issues that most of my siSTAR's had on their breastfeeding journey. I already know without a shadow of a doubt I would breastfeed if I had children. Growing up for me it was the norm. Although I was not breastfed all my little cousins that came after me definitely were. So I was blessed to see my Aunties breastfeeding.

I breastfed all three of my Sun's to a year, however my youngest and I are going on a few months shy of four years now!!!! We still haven't come up with an official stop date...lol. However when you are surrounded by people who support you in your journey, it makes it so much more easier to have a successful breastfeeding relationship. My hubby has been extremely supportive of our journey😀.

However what people sometimes fail to tell you is although it's beautiful and the most natural way to nurture your baby, for some it's a lot of work. The blessing is now there's so many amazing resources out there to educate yourself to prayerfully ensure a happy and successful breastfeeding journey!!!

Real Fruit Flavored Water

Shalom Y'all
I pray this finds all's well with you and yours. With so much going on in the world today I've found myself completely of balance. Our babies being kill by those that promised to protect and serve. City size swimming pool in New Orleans, families losing everything they worked so hard for. Little innocence babies getting caught up in the cross fire here at home. I feel like I'm in a movie with no Hero to save the day!

My anxiety level was through the roof! So I decided that outside of my daily devotional and meditation I'd Water Fast for the next few days,to recenter myself. I grow up doing weekly fast so it'll be a piece of cake...lol. However sometimes I get tired of plan o'l water. So for the next few days of my fast I'm going to show you ways to not only take your 'Fruit Flavoured Water' to the next level,we're going to alkaline it as well...don't get no better then that😉.

Makes 4 serving (1pt each)

2 qts of distilled water
2 lb fresh strawberries
4 key limes
1 qt size pitcher
4 pt size jars
Blender
Long wooden spoon
Strainer

Wash strawberries, cut off green stems. Add water to blender, drop in fresh washed strawberries. Peel key limes add to blender as well. Blend fruit and water on high until completely liquefied. Place strainer over qt pitcher to strain pulp, put 'Real Fruit Flavoured Water' in icebox to chill for 30 minutes are so. Divide up in 4 pt size jars for on the go...enjoy!!!

World Breastfeeding Week

Shalom Y'all!

With this being World Breastfeeding Week, I'm going to share a little of the joys(in the next 7 days) of my breastfeeding experiences. Breastfeeding is a beautiful thang, but trust it ain't alway sa cake walk lol. However I've been blessed to feed 3 Sun's from my breast, and I thank the Most High for giving me the strength, energy and support I needed to endure the ups, downs, and all-arounds of breastfeeding.

This photo was taken when the youngest of my Suns and I were at a Ovarian Cancer Walk in honor of my hubby's auntie who passed from it (RIPower). This was the first time Masai and I had been to a public place (I literally keep him home about a year..lol we only went out when we had to),and our first public breastfeeding session!!! As we enjoyed the walk he started getting really fussy, so we found a spot and gotta eating. It was the first of many sessions. Breastfeeding is just one of the MANY joys we as mother's are blessed to do for our children. Breastfeeding in my book is truly one of those things it's our superpower...lol. I was blessed to be around family that breastfed, I'm actually a 2nd generation breastfeeder (and I'm very PROUD of that😉). So until next time

Light, Love and Shalom!!!

Oral Hydration Solution

Looking for a great way to stay hydrated?? However the thought of putting all those yucky unhealthy ingredients from the popular store brought brands in your temple makes you cringe...lol??
