On April 19, 1978, Max Robinson made history as the first Black anchor of a network newscast, joining ABC World News Tonight in 1978 and breaking barriers in American journalism.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1939, Robinson faced systemic racism early in life, including being expelled from college for staging a protest against segregation. Still, he pushed forward, studying at Virginia Union University, an HBCU, and later launching his broadcasting career at a local TV station where his image was initially hidden behind a screen to conceal his race.
But Robinson refused to be silenced or sidelined. He rose to national prominence not just for his commanding presence and journalistic excellence, but for using his platform to speak truth to power and advocate for more honest representation of Black communities in media. He sadly died of HIV/AIDS in December of 1988.
