Black History(Mr. John Ware)

Born around 1845 on a South Carolina plantation,John Ware began life with no freedom, wealth, and no promise of tomorrow. But what he did have was grit. After emancipation,Ware headed west. First to Texas then Montana, where he built a reputation as a fearless cowboy and unmatched horseman. In 1882, he crossed the border into Canada.

There in the wide open spaces of Alberta he found a new beginning. In 1891, he bought land near Millarville and started his own ranch. A year later, he married Mildred Lewis, and together they raised six children—carving out a life on the frontier. As the region grew, the family moved again this time to the Red Deer River valley, near today’s Dinosaur Provincial Park.

The land was rough. Winters were brutal. But they endured—building fences, herding cattle, raising children, and writing a legacy with every hoofprint in the prairie dust. Despite facing so much racism,John Ware was known across the West as a man of honor, strength, and skill. He wasn’t just respected he was revered.
